Nirmala started her career as a child artist in cinema at the age of four in 1950.
She gained fame after starring in the Malayalam hit film "Bhargavi Nilayam" alongside Prem Nazir in 1964.
Nirmala met her second husband, Krishna Ghattamaneni, while working on the film 'Saakshi' in 1967, which was her second Telugu film.
Together, they acted in a total of 47 films.
In 2002, she earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for directing the most films by a woman, a total of 44.
Nirmala established her own production company called Vijaya Krishna Movies, which produced 15 films.
Originally known as something else, she changed her name to Vijaya Nirmala in 1965 to honor the 'Vijaya Movie Studio' that gave her a big break.
She was related to actresses Jayasudha and Subhashini as their aunt.
Nirmala did not have children with her second husband, who had five kids from a previous marriage.
She became a stepmother to actors Ramesh Babu and Mahesh Babu, as well as actress Manjula.
Her grandson, Naveen Vijaya Krishna, followed in her footsteps and is now an actor too.
