Vernon was born in a humble family on the Cape Flats.
He grew up with his three brothers and mother in his grandparents' home.
He started playing cricket at the age of 8.
At 20, he gave his first autograph while playing for Cape Cobras.
On his 22nd birthday, he made his cricket debut, taking 4/42 in an ODI against Ireland in 2007.
It took him about 4 years to join South Africa's Test playing XI.
In his Test debut against Australia, he took his first 5-wicket haul.
In 2012, he won the SA Sportsman of the Year Award.
In 2013, he became the No.1 ICC Test bowler, surpassing his teammate Dale Steyn.
That same year, he started the 'Vernon Philander Foundation' and conducts a winter blanket drive.
He believes his bowling style is best suited for the new ball.
Off the field, he enjoys playing golf.
