In 1980, he enrolled in the National Defence Academy (NDA) after completing schooling at Sainik School in Rewa.
Due to his strong academic performance, Upendra was assigned as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and the Higher Command Wing of the Army War College in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.
He has had two international postings, first at the United Nations Operations In Somalia II (UNOSOM II) headquarters and later as a Military Advisor with the Government of Seychelles.
