Todd Murphy is an Australian cricketer who received his baggy Green Test cap (465) from Nathan Lyon before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener against India on 9 February 2023 in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
Todd grew up in Moama, New South Wales, where his father Jamie Murphy, originally from Mathoura, settled.
He shared his father's love for cricket from a young age and started off as a batsman before transitioning to bowling off-spin at 16.
His father played Premier cricket in Australia and even played alongside Shane Warne.
His elder brother Joel Murphy played cricket for St Kilda and later joined Sandhurst Cricket Club in Bendigo.
In his early days, Todd was known as a larrikin in primary school, showing a competitive spirit and determination.
In 2017, he was named the Sportstar of the Year in the junior category.
During an under-16 training session in Rochester, former cricketer Craig Howard noticed Todd, leading to his selection in Australia's U-19 squad for the 2020 U19 World Cup.
He plays for Moama Cricket Club and has also spent two seasons with St Kilda in the Victorian Premier Cricket Club.
His List A debut was on 10 March 2021 for Victoria Second XI against Tasmania, and he made his first-class debut for Victoria in the 2020-21 Sheffield Shield season.
In the 2020-21 Shield season, he scored 24 runs and took 7 wickets in his second match, helping Victoria secure a win over Tasmania.
He was on the Australia A squad during a Sri Lanka tour in June 2021 and played his first T20 match for Sydney Sixers in December 2021.
During the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield season, he represented Victoria and was seen as a potential successor to Nathan Lyon.
Murphy has taken 29 dismissals at an average of 25.20 in his first 10 first-class matches.
He was selected in the Australia Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in 2023, along with Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar, and Mitchell Swepson as the spinning options.
