Balraj Dutt was born in Khurd Village, Jhelum District, British India.
Sunil's father passed away when he was 5 years old.
At 18, he witnessed Hindu-Muslim riots nationwide.
His family was rescued by a Muslim man named Yakub, a friend of his father.
They relocated to Mandauli village near River Yamuna in Yamuna Nagar, Punjab (now in Haryana).
He later moved to Lucknow and spent a considerable time in Aminabad Galli.
After graduating from Jai Hind College in Bombay, he worked at the city's BEST Transport division.
He also worked as an RJ on the Hindi Service of Radio Ceylon.
He gained fame after starring in Mother India alongside Nargis in 1957.
Sunil Dutt directed and starred in the solo cast film Yadein in 1964.
He founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation to assist cancer patients in memory of his wife.
In 1995, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was bestowed with the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
