Controversy | Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Philip, went on a trip to India in October 1997. During their trip to Punjab, they visited the site of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to give tribute to people who died there in a massacre done by British troops in 1919. Many Indian groups were angered by the news of her visit and wanted her to apologize. People protested against her and shouted “Killer Queen, go back.” The Queen and Prince Philip paid their respects by laying a wreath and stood in a moment of silence for 30 seconds; after this, people halted their protests. |
