After earning his B.Tech, he cleared the UPSC civil services examination in 1986.
He completed his police training in 1989 at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Praveen Sood worked with international law enforcement on cases as a police advisor in Mauritius from 1999 to 2002.
