Prabath started his cricket journey at Christ Church College Matale before moving to Lumbini College Colombo.
He made his List-A debut for Colombo Cricket Club on 6 December 2011.
His first-class debut took place for Colombo Cricket Club on 10 February 2012.
Prabath's T20 debut was during the 2011/12 CSN Premier Clubs T20 Tournament.
He was picked by Jaffna Kings in the inaugural Lanka Premier League.
He contributed to Sinhalese Sports Club's victory in the 2020–21 SLC Twenty20 Tournament.
On his Test debut, he took a remarkable five-wicket haul in both innings.
Despite missing the first Test against Australia, he ended up as the series' highest wicket-taker.
