Pervez Musharraf was a smoker.
Musharraf was born in Delhi, British India to a family from Sayyid nobility.
During the 1947 India-Pakistan partition, his family moved to Pakistan when he was four years old.
In his childhood, Musharraf was affectionately called "Palloo" by his mother and relatives.
He entered Pakistan Military Academy at the age of 18.
While attending college, Musharraf shared a room with two other military officers.
In 1964, he joined the Pakistan Army with the artillery regiment.
His first battle experience was in the Second Kashmir War in 1965.
He received the Imtiazi Sanad medal for his bravery during the war.
Between 1988 and 1989, Musharraf proposed the Kargil Infiltration to Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, which she rejected.
He pursued a Master's degree at the Royal College of Defense Studies in Britain from 1990 to 1991.
He graduated with honors for his thesis on the Indo-Pak arms race.
On 7 October 1998, Musharraf was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff.
He passed away on 5 February 2023 at the American Hospital Dubai while undergoing treatment for amyloidosis, after living in Dubai exile since 2016.
