Birla began his political involvement in childhood and has been active in politics. He has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and served as Vice-Chairman of the National Co-operative Consumer Federation Limited.
He served as Chairman of CONFED, Jaipur from June 1992 to June 1995. During his first term as a Member of Parliament, he was on the Standing Committee on Energy and Committee on Petitions and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
In addition to his political role, Birla is known for his philanthropic endeavors. He initiated programs like Paridhan (2012) to provide clothes and books for the vulnerable. He also launched blood donation drives, a free meal program, and a medicine bank offering free medicine for the needy.
In the 2014 General Elections, he defeated Ijyaraj Singh of the Indian National Congress, a member of Kota's royal family. On June 19, 2019, Birla assumed office as the 17th Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
