He was inspired by his father, C.J. Narayan, who played cricket for Tata Electric Company in Mumbai.
He started playing cricket at the age of nine.
On October 27, 2016, he made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh against Tamil Nadu in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy at Cuttack and was awarded the 'Man of the Match.'
His List-A debut was on February 26, 2017, playing for Tamil Nadu against Uttar Pradesh at Cuttack.
In 9 first-class matches, he scored 437 runs with an average of 43.70, including 2 centuries, 1 half-century, and took 33 catches.
He scored 216 runs in 13 T20 matches with an average of 30.85.
In 10 List-A matches, he scored 443 runs with an average of 44.30.
Chennai Super Kings selected him for ₹20 Lakhs to play in the IPL 2018.
Although he wanted to be a fast bowler, his father encouraged him to become a wicketkeeper.
He believes that being a wicketkeeper helps him develop his batting by allowing him to closely observe each ball and have a 360-degree view of the game on the field.
