Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is a Bangladeshi freedom fighter, politician, and former jurist.
He was nominated as the presidential candidate by the ruling Awami League in 2023.
Chuppu grew up in a middle-class family in village Shivrampur, Pabna.
He entered politics during his student years and led the student and youth wing of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In 1971, he participated in the Bangladesh Liberation War and played a vital role in the northern region.
During the independence movement, he served as the convener of Sadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangam Parishad in the Pabna district.
Shahabuddin Chuppu resumed political activities after Bangladesh gained independence in March 1971.
He became the President of the Pabna District Jubo League in 1974.
In 1975, following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he was imprisoned for three years.
After his release, he traveled to India to meet his colleagues.
In 1980, Chuppu joined the national newspaper Daily Banglar Bani as a journalist.
He also worked as an Assistant Judge in Bangladesh's judicial service.
Shahabuddin Chuppu held the position of publicity secretary for the Awami League in the Pabna district.
He was elected as the general secretary of the Judicial Service Association in 1995 and coordinated the Bangabandhu murder trial.
After the 2001 general elections, he chaired the Judicial Inquiry Commission.
Chuppu retired as a District and Sessions Judge in 2006 and became the Chairman of the Labour Court.
He served as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh from 2008 to 2011.
Chuppu participated in national and international seminars and workshops on Case Management and Court Management.
From 2011 to 2016, he was the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
In 2020, he rejoined politics and was appointed as a member of Awami League's advisory council.
In 2022, he became Chairman of the Awami League's Publicity and Publications cell.
During the 2022 national council, Shahabuddin served as the election commissioner.
He currently holds the position of vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd.
Chuppu has provided advisory services at NRB Global Bank Ltd.
He is involved with various social, educational, and cultural organizations in Bangladesh.
Mohammad Shahabuddin represented Bangladesh at an International Seminar on 'Prevailing Law in Bangladesh' in Beijing, China.
On 12 February 2023, he was appointed as the Awami League's candidate for the 2023 presidential election.
