Nabi's family migrated to Peshawar, Pakistan, during the Soviet Cold War in Afghanistan.
He started playing cricket with a tennis ball at 10 years old and trained at Arshad Khan’s academy in Peshawar.
Initially a pacer, he switched to become an off-spinner to prevent injuries.
At age 17, he returned to Afghanistan and joined the national cricket team as a bowler, later developing as a batsman.
In 2003, Nabi scored 61 runs in his debut match against Rahim Yar Khan Cricket Association in Pakistan.
During a match against MCC in 2006, he scored 116 runs, impressing England's test captain, Mike Gatting.
Nabi aided Afghanistan in winning the ICC World Cricket League Division Five and Division Four in 2008.
He played in the ICC World Cricket League Division Three in 2009, earning ODI status for Afghanistan.
