He initially played tennis in school before moving to Brisbane to pursue tennis professionally.
At the age of 17, he transitioned to cricket and was noticed by Dennis Lillee.
In 2001, he made his first-class debut for the Queensland cricket team.
He was honored with the ICC Cricketer of the Year award twice, in 2009 and 2014.
He was named Man of the Series in the 2013-2014 Ashes series.
In 2014, he was awarded the Allan Border Medal.
He retired from international cricket in November 2015.
