Some Lesser Known Facts

Mira Nair was born in Odisha to a humble family background. She was the youngest of three siblings but became the family's leader. She received a full scholarship from Harvard University due to her academic excellence. Nair began her career by producing documentaries focused on social issues in India. Her first documentary film, Jama Masjid Street, was released in 1979, showcasing the life of Muslims in Delhi. She founded the Salaam Balak foundation to help street children in India after the success of her debut film, Salaam Bombay, in 1988. In 2012, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. Nair established Maisha, a school that provides financial support and training for young screenwriters in India and East Africa.
