She hails from a humble background with parents involved in Jhum cultivation.
She attended the village school up to 8th grade, then shifted to Imphal for 9th and 10th grades, where she later took her 10th exams independently.
At 15, she chose boxing as her career after being inspired by Indian boxer Dingko Singh.
Despite her passion for boxing, she kept it hidden from her father due to concerns about facial injuries affecting her marital prospects.
She met her husband at the 2001 national games and got married in 2005 after falling in love.
Following a break after having children, she resumed boxing and clinched a silver medal in the 2008 Asian Woman's Boxing Championship.
She became the lone Indian woman to qualify for and win a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.
She holds the distinction of winning medals in all six world championships, being a 5-time World Amateur Boxing Champion.
She ranks 4th in the AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category.
She has received accolades such as the Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna for her contributions to boxing.
She serves as the brand ambassador for the Super Fight League and appeared in its final episode.
Her inspiring journey led to the creation of a biopic film titled 'Mary Kom' in 2014.
