Martin's father is Guyanese and his mother is Danish, they met in the United States.
His father's surname was originally Brathwaite but was changed to Braithwaite when he arrived in the U.S.
From a young age, Martin dreamed of being a footballer; his local newspaper captured a picture of him kicking a ball when he was just two years old.
He suffered from Legg-Calve-Perthes disease in childhood, leading to two years in a wheelchair from ages 5 to 7.
