Malala was born in the Swat district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
She was named after an Afghanistani poet and Warrior woman.
Malala's father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who is an educational activist, was her main teacher.
Initially aspiring to become a doctor, Malala later decided to pursue a career in politics.
In September 2008, she first spoke out about education rights.
Malala participated as a peer educator in the Institute for War and Peace Reporting’s Open Minds Pakistan youth program.
Following a Taliban edict in Swat, all girls were banned from attending school after January 15, 2009.
On October 9, 2012, she was shot by a Taliban gunman.
Malala had surgery on February 2, 2013, to restore her hearing.
