Maithili Sharan Gupt (1886-1964) was a well-known Indian nationalist poet recognized as the Rashtra Kavi (National Poet) and honored for his literary works.
He was a member of the Kankane clan from the Gahoi Baniya community.
Gupt wrote patriotic poems in simple language using the Khadi Boli dialect of Hindi.
He supported the Indian National Congress in their efforts to free India from British rule.
After India gained independence, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament).
Gupt did not favor formal education and chose to study languages independently at home.
His first major work, 'Rang mein Bhang,' was published in 1910.
