Facts | - Martyred Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz belonged to a humble background from the region of Kulgam district, Jammu & Kashmir.
- Ummer belonged to the 129th batch of cadets from the National Defence Academy, Pune, and also did one-year training from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
- He was an exceptional sportsman and was known for skills in volleyball, hockey, and basketball.
- He was commissioned on 10 December 2016, belonged to 2 Rajput Rifles of the Indian Army and was posted in Jammu & Kashmir’s Akhnoor sector.
- On 9 May 2017, at around 8 pm, he was kidnapped by militants in Shopian where Ummer went for his cousin’s wedding. Three militants wearing masks asked Ummer, who was unarmed, to accompany them, and warned his family not to call the police.
- On 10 May 2017, his bullet-riddled body was found near the bus stand in Harmen, Shopian. According to reports, he was fired from a close range, and the bullets had hit his head and stomach or chest area.
- Ummer was laid to rest in Kulgam.
