Some Lesser Known Facts

Jaswant Singh Gill rescued 65 coal miners in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989 - India's first successful coal mine rescue.
He participated in athletic and bhangra competitions during his school and college years.
After graduating, he passed the entrance exam for the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.
He worked at Karam Chand Thapar & Bros (Coal Sales) Ltd before joining Coal India Limited in 1972.
Throughout his career at Coal India Limited, he held various engineering roles eventually becoming the Chief General Manager ED (Safety & Rescue).
In 1989, he orchestrated a rescue operation for 65 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal.
Jaswant Singh created a steel capsule and drilled a 22-inch borehole for the rescue operation.
He descended into the borewell and successfully rescued all 65 miners, earning recognition as a hero.
He was honored for his bravery in the rescue operation and later assisted in rescuing 14 miners in Meghalaya.
Jaswant Singh retired in 1998 and contributed to disaster management and social services initiatives.
He served as the President of Rotary International and was a guest speaker on 'Josh Talks.'
Jaswant Singh passed away at his home in Amritsar, Punjab, India, in November 2019.
A movie based on his life, titled 'Mission Raniganj,' starred Akshay Kumar as Jaswant Singh Gill.
