His father worked for the Irrigation Department.
During his mid-term schooling, he stayed at Krim Mansion in Jamshedpur near a Cinema Hall where he watched films for free.
He struggled in academics, failing in the 9th standard, but his father motivated him to work hard for the Civil Services.
He pursued education at Hindu College, University of Delhi.
After finishing studies in Delhi, he enrolled in a filmmaking course at Xavier Institute of Communication in Mumbai.
He also studied advertising and marketing to become a copywriter.
He began his career at Zee TV as a tape boy.
Later, he worked at Crest Communications as a writer for TV programs, spending long hours in front of a computer.
Imtiaz Ali wrote the script for "Socha Na Tha," which was eventually chosen by Sunny Deol to launch Abhay Deol.
His breakthrough came with the success of his second film "Jab We Met" in 2007.
