  • Threatened to kill Narendra Modi in a live speech: In 2014, Imran came into the limelight when he threatened to chop Narendra Modi into pieces during a rally. He was caught on tape saying 'I am a man of the street, ready to give my life for my people. I am neither afraid of death or of killing....He thinks this is Gujarat. There are only 4% Muslims in Gujarat. There are 42% Muslims here. If he tries to convert this into Gujarat, then we will chop him.' A case was registered against him and he was arrested under sections 153A, 295A, 504, and 506. He apologized for his remarks later and said that he should have been more careful with the words he used in his speech.

Imran won the 2006 Saharanpur Nagar Palika Parishad elections for the presidential post by defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate Harish Malik with a vote percentage of 43.60%.
Imran won the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha elections from the Muzaffarabad Assembly Constituency Seat as an independent candidate defeating Jagdish Singh Rana of the Samajwadi Party with a margin of 3,683 votes.
In 2022, Imran switched from the Indian National Congress to the Samajwadi Party and later to the Bahujan Samaj Party. In August 2023, he was expelled from the BSP due to disciplinary issues and a lack of will to work for the party in his constituency.
Imran comes from a political background as his uncle Rasheed Masood was a well-known politician. Imran separated from his uncle because he wanted to bring his son forward in politics, which did not seem right to Imran at that time.
