G. Marimuthu (1967-2023) was an Indian film director and actor primarily working in the Tamil entertainment industry.
He gained popularity for portraying Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran in the Tamil TV series Ethirneechal (2022) on Sun TV.
Originally from a family of farmers, Marimuthu was inspired by the success stories of Ilaiyaraaja, Bharathiraja, and Vairamuthu from the Theni district, motivating him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
In 1990, with Rs 200 in hand, he left his hometown Pasumalaitheri in Theni to pursue his dream of becoming a film director in Chennai.
Upon moving to Chennai, he took up various odd jobs including waitering at hotels for survival.
During the initial stages of his career, Marimuthu faced hardships, once surviving on water and pickles for three days due to financial constraints, which led to a health scare.
He started working for lyricist Vairamuthu, replying to fan letters, and later transitioned to an assistant director role.
Marimuthu worked as an assistant director on several films with directors like Rajkiran, Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, and S. J. Suryah.
He garnered praise for co-directing Silambarasan’s Manmadhan (2004) and made his directorial debut with Kannum Kannum (2008).
In 2014, he directed his second Tamil film Pulivaal and also appeared in the French film Son épouse.
Marimuthu ventured into acting in the 2010s, portraying various roles including a corrupt inspector in Yuddham Sei (2011) and a police officer in several Tamil films.
His acting credits include roles in Marudhu (2016), Vada Chennai (2018), Shylock (2020), and Tamil web series.
He played Chithappa in the action comedy Jailer (2023) alongside Rajinikanth and appeared in Atrangi Re (2021) as Mandy’s father.
Marimuthu's last Tamil film release was Red Sandal Wood (2023) before his passing.
He was praised for his negative role in Ethirneechal (2022) and won the Favourite Villain award for his performance.
Marimuthu passed away from a cardiac arrest while dubbing for Ethirneechal in Chennai on 8 September 2023.
