Her father, Chunnibhai Kapadia, was a Gujarati entrepreneur.
Her younger sister, Simple Kapadia, was also an actress and passed away in 2009 due to cancer.
At 15, she got married to Rajesh Khanna, six months before her debut film, Bobby, released in 1973.
After her first film, she took a break from acting for 12 years reportedly due to a ban imposed by Rajesh Khanna after their marriage.
She views her marriage to Rajesh Khanna as insincere.
In an interview, she shared that she has always been passionate about films and dreamed of becoming an actress since childhood.
Raj Kapoor launched her in the film industry and cast her in the lead role in the 1973 teenage romance movie, Bobby.
