Badruddin Faiz Tyabji was asked by Jawaharlal Nehru to assist in creating the Indian national emblem.
He formed a Flag Committee led by Rajendra Prasad to work on the national flag design.
The final form of the flag was approved during a Constituent Assembly meeting on 22 July 1947 and was adopted as India's official flag on 15 August 1947.
His wife, Surayya Tyabji, made the first copy of the national flag, which was flown on Nehru's car during India's independence.
