While working in Mumbai, Asif spent most of his salary watching plays.
In 1991, he watched Salim Ghouse's production of Boesman and Lena repeatedly, leading to his introduction to Mumbai's theater scene.
Ghouse eventually cast him as Horatio in his theatrical rendition of Hamlet.
While maintaining a day job, Basra performed in various Hindi, English, and Urdu plays.
He gained acclaim for roles in productions like Mahatma vs. Gandhi and Main Bhi Superman.
In 1996, Asif left his job to focus on his burgeoning theater career.
His Bollywood debut was in Anurag Kashyap's "Black Friday" and Rahul Dholakia's "Parzania."
Towards the end of his career, Basra conducted acting workshops at Prithvi Theater.
He appeared in the 2018 film "Hichki" alongside Rani Mukerji.
Tragically, on November 12, 2020, he was found dead in McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh.
He was last seen in Amazon Prime Video's series "Paatal Lok."
