Anju and Nasrullah connected on Facebook in 2020 from Upper Dir district in Pakistan. Anju and her family switched from Hinduism to Christianity while living in Gwalior, India. Anju misled her family about her travel plans to Pakistan, starting from a trip to her sister in Jaipur. Anju clarified that her journey to Pakistan was for sightseeing and not marriage, which was confirmed by Nasrullah. Anju obtained a visa in May 2023 to visit Pakistan for 30 days.
