Ajay Maken's desire to enter politics was initially rejected by his father due to his uncles' premature deaths in politics.
His grandfathers, Jagat Ram and O. P. Maken, were both freedom fighters in India.
Lalit Maken joined politics after his brother, Satya Prakash Maken, was assassinated and became a prominent trade union leader and member of parliament.
Lalit Maken married Gitanjali, daughter of India's ninth president Shankar Dayal Sharma, and both were tragically killed in 1985.
Following the deaths of Lalit Maken and Gitanjali, Ajay Maken entered politics.
