Some Lesser Known Facts

Karim Benzema's grandfather, Da Lakehal Benzema, emigrated from Tigzirt, Aït Djellil in Algeria to Lyon, France in 1950.
He was raised in the Terraillon area of Bron, Lyon, which has higher crime rates and is home to many immigrant families.
At age 8, Benzema joined SC Bron Terraillon Perle, a local club.
Initially chubby, he lacked confidence and kept a low profile at Lyon Academy.
During a match against Lyon Youth Academy, Benzema scored two crucial goals for SC Bron Terraillon.
At 16, he demonstrated his hard work ethic by training rigorously and boxing during off-seasons.
Facing teasing from senior teammates, Benzema once stood up for himself, declaring his ambitions.
He inked his first pro contract with Lyon in January 2005.
Benzema was part of the French squad that clinched the 2004 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
His debut Champions League goal came against Rosenborg in 2005.
