T. S. Sivagnanam is an Indian justice appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Calcutta on 11 May 2023. |
He grew up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in a well-to-do family. |
Sivagnanam enrolled at the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 10 September 1986 after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in law. |
He started his legal practice with senior advocate R. Gandhi. |
After 14 years as an advocate, he became the Additional Standing Counsel of the Central Government. |
Sivagnanam also served as the Counsel for Southern Railway and a senior panel advocate for the Central Government. |
In 2007, he was nominated as a panel lawyer for the High Court of Judicature at Madras. |
He later served as a senior panel lawyer for Customs & Central Excise Department and as the Special Counsel for the Department of Revenue. |
Sivagnanam became an Additional Judge at the Madras High Court on 31 March 2009 and a permanent judge two years later. |
He headed the Computer Committee of the Madras High Court, overseeing technological advancements during his tenure. |
In 2021, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court and sworn in as a judge on 25 October 2021. |
Sivagnanam was recommended as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium on 9 February 2023 and officially appointed on 11 May 2023. |
Before becoming Chief Justice, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. |
Sivagnanam will retire from his position on 15 September 2025 after approximately two years. |
He was part of the Board of Governors of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy and inaugurated the SICCI Centre for ADR in Chennai on 8 April 2019. |
