Some Lesser Known Facts

Afzal Ansari joined the college student union while studying at the Post Graduate College in Ghazipur.
His grandfather, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, led the Indian medical mission during the Balkan War and a ward in London was named after him at Charing Cross Hospital.
After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Mohammad Ali Jinnah offered Afzal’s maternal grandfather a position in the Pakistan Army, which he declined to continue serving in the Indian Army.
Afzal won the 1985 UP Legislative Assembly elections after contesting on the Communist Party of India ticket.
He participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Cricket World Cup held in the UK while serving as a parliamentarian.
In 2002, Afzal Ansari was defeated by Krishnanand Rai of the BJP in the UP Vidhan Sabha elections.
He secured victory in the 2004 general elections with 74,015 votes.
Both Mukhtar and Afzal Ansari were removed from the BSP in 2010 due to their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
Afzal Ansari was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on 1 May 2023 following a court conviction on 29 April 2023.
