Some Lesser Known Facts

Irshad Kamil was born in Malerkotla, Punjab as the 7th child in his family.
His decision to pursue poetry as a career deviated from his father's wishes for him.
During his school years, he excelled in writing poetry and articles, praised by his teachers for his essay writing skills.
Despite enrolling in Government College for science at his father's request, Kamil found he had no natural talent for the subject.
He failed his math and Physics exams in his first year of B.Sc.
In 1985, he spent about 7 to 8 months in Shimla on a trip that he considers a significant turning point in his life.
While studying Hindi and Geography in Ludhiana, he befriended Tejwant Kittu, who later became a close friend.
Kamil agreed to write songs for a play called ‘Raja Aur Kisaan’ while at Panjab University, directed by Zulfiqar Khan.
After working at ‘The Tribune’ in Chandigarh, where he translated reports for two years, Kamil transitioned to a different phase in his life he coined as 'Dashtnawardi' and 'Ghumakkadi'.
