Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was born to Maghar Singh Sidhu and Naseeb Kaur after 18 years of marriage.
His father, Maghar Singh, was a landlord in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district.
Born into a Sikh family, Gurmeet was not particularly inclined towards any religious faith.
Gurmeet's father started going to Dera Sacha Sauda, a religious cult, when Gurmeet was a child.
Gurmeet became a Dera worker at the age of 7, following his father's footsteps.
While not very spiritual initially, Gurmeet assisted his father in Seva and performed odd jobs at the Dera.
At 18 years old in the 1980s, he married Harjeet Kaur.
In 1990, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh became the third Chief of the DSS at 23 years old.
