Gautam was adopted by his maternal grandparents at 18 days old and grew up in Karol Bagh, Delhi.
He began playing cricket at age 10 and joined his school's team.
In 2000, he became a part of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
His school friend, Rajat Bhatia, captained the cricket team with him.
Bhagat Singh and Mother Teresa are his inspirations.
If not a cricketer, he would have chosen a military career.
Teaming up with Virender Sehwag, they formed one of the most successful opening pairs in cricket.
His memorable innings was against New Zealand in 2009, scoring 137 runs in 643 minutes.
