She comes from a family with a strong musical heritage, including her Padma Bhushan awardee grandfather, Dr. Sripada Pinakapani.
Raised by her mother due to her father leaving when she was just one-and-a-half years old, her mother was her early music teacher in Hindustani and Carnatic music.
After spending some of her childhood in Mumbai, she later moved to Chennai at the age of 6 and began her schooling there.
Her musical journey began at a young age, inheriting music skills from her mother.
At 14, she won the 'Saptasawarangal' singing competition, catching the attention of singer Srinivas, who introduced her to A. R. Rahman.
Debuting in 2002 at 15 with "Kannathil Muthamittal," she gained fame with the song 'Oru Deivam Thantha Poovae' composed by A. R. Rahman.
Her Bollywood debut was in 2005 with the song 'Holi Re' for 'Mangal Pandey: The Rising', branching into Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada films.
In 2005, she founded 'Blue Elephant,' a language services company.
