He is a lawyer from Chhutmalpur, a village near Shabbirpur in Saharanpur District.
In 2011, he intended to pursue higher studies in the United States.
While caring for his sick father in a Saharanpur hospital, he learned about atrocities against Dalits and decided to become a "Dalit Activist."
In 2015, he established the Bhim Army Ekta Mission, also known as Bhim Army, with over 50,000 members.
Chandrashekhar's desire to fight against Dalit discrimination was sparked by hearing about Thakurs separating Dalit children in a nearby school, considering them 'untouchables.'
In 2016, Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhim Army gained attention for proposing a board reading "The Great Chamar" in the village, which faced opposition from Thakurs.
Thakurs set fire to Dalit homes in Shabbirpur village, Saharanpur in May 2017 after Dalits complained about loud music during Maharana Pratap Jayanti. This led to Dalits retaliating by burning down a police post in Saharanpur.
He organized a Bhim Army rally at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 21 May 2017 without permission, drawing over 5000 supporters.
On 17 February 2021, he was recognized in TIME magazine's annual list of 100 "emerging leaders who are shaping the future."
