Arun Lal is a former Indian cricketer known for being a right-handed opening batsman. He is also a commentator and cricket columnist. In his debut Test against Sri Lanka, Arun scored 63 runs with a partnership of 156 with Sunil Gavaskar. Arun's highest test score of 93 was against West Indies in Calcutta in 1987. In his 16 Test innings from 1982 to 1989, he scored 729 runs at an average of 26.03. Arun played 13 ODI matches with an average of 9.36. He led Bengal to its first Ranji Trophy victory in 1989. Arun played 156 first-class matches, scoring over 10,000 runs with a batting average of 46.94. He retired from competitive cricket in 2001 and then club cricket six years later. Arun excelled as Bengal's chief coach and head coach at the National Cricket Academy's East Zone branch. Under Arun's guidance, Bengal reached the 2020 Ranji Trophy finals after 13 years.
