In January 2024, Suchana Seth reportedly murdered her four-year-old son by strangulating him with a pillow or a towel at a service apartment in Goa. Her crime came to light after the apartment staff went to clean the room, where she was staying with her son, as they found blood stains on the towel. Soon, the staff informed the Calangute police. The staff also told the police that when Suchana left the apartment, her son was not with her and the suitcase that she was carrying was very heavy. |
Apparently, Suchana moved to Goa with her son for vacation on 6 January 2024 and rented a service apartment in the Candolim area in North Goa. On 8 January, she asked the hotel staff to arrange a taxi for her from Goa to Bangalore. The staff suggested her to take a flight as a taxi would have cost her Rs. 30,000. However, she insisted on going by taxi only. Later, a taxi was arranged by the staff and she left for Bangalore. |
After taking inputs from the apartment staff, the police called Suchana and asked her about the blood stains on the towel and her missing son to which she replied that the stains were due to her monthly periods. She further said that she has dropped her son to her friend’s house in Margao. On asking, she provided the police with her friend’s address, however, it came out to be fake. |
The police then called the taxi driver and asked him to take her to the nearest police station. They had reached the Chitradurga district of Karnataka by then. When the Calangute police reached there, they arrested Suchana and recovered her son’s body from her travel bag. She was then taken back to Goa and sent on remand for six days by a court in Mapusa town. |
According to the police investigation, after killing her son, Suchana tried to kill herself by slitting her wrists using a pair of scissors. However, she changed her mind and decided to move back to Bangalore instead. |
The police also revealed that there were two bottles of cough syrup recovered from the apartment in which she was staying with her son. Possibly, she gave an overdose of the syrup to her son and while he was asleep, she strangulated him. |
Suchana was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence), and also under the Goa Children’s Act. |
Although the exact reason for the crime was not known, police suspected that Suchana’s strained relationship with her husband was a possible reason behind the crime. The police also said that Seth was unhappy with the Bengaluru family court’s order that the father of her son could meet him every Sunday. |
According to Suchana’s husband, they got married in 2010 and after the birth of their son, differences began arising between the two as Suchana was very possessive of her son. Soon, they got separated and filed for a divorce. In 2024, their proceedings were going on. |
In 2022, Suchana filed a domestic violence case against her husband. |
