He was born in a small village in Hisar, Haryana in a bania family.
In 1965, he dropped out of his 10th grade to join his family business as a commission agent supplying rice.
He started a manufacturing business named Essel packaging, focused on plastic tubes for toothpaste.
In 1989, he established EsselWorld, a recreational park in north Bombay.
In 1992, he co-launched India’s first Hindi cable channel, ZeeTV.
ZeeTV reached 959 million people in 169 countries.
He launched India's first lottery and Dish TV.
In 2005, he co-launched DNA, an Indian broadsheet newspaper.
