Sajjan Kumar was born in a financially disadvantaged family in Delhi, British India.
During his childhood, he had to sell tea to support his family.
In the 1970s, he became interested in entering politics.
In 1977, Sajjan Kumar was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from Madipur.
He developed a close relationship with Sanjay Gandhi and gained his trust.
In 1980, he defeated the first Chief Minister of Delhi, Brahm Prakash, in the Lok Sabha Elections.
Following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Sajjan Kumar was implicated as a key figure in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Despite his involvement in the riots, he contested and won the 1991 Lok Sabha Elections.
