Safoora Zargar is a Sociology student pursuing MPhil at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi.
She hails from Kishtwar, Jammu, and Kashmir and lacks typical Kashmiri features due to her upbringing in Delhi and NCR.
During school, she faced taunts for being a Kashmiri Muslim and was often singled out for her background.
Despite feeling like an outsider at times, she considers herself a true Delhite after living in Delhi for 20 years.
At Delhi University, she was actively involved with the Women’s Development Cell and started a campus magazine while pursuing her BA in Sociology.
Following a brief marketing career, she completed an MA in Sociology at Jamia Millia Islamia.
During her post-graduation, she protested against the Kathua Rape case and also participated in demonstrations against the Syria turmoil.
In 2019, she began her MPhil in sociology at Jamia Millia Islamia and joined the anti-CAA protests in Delhi.
During an anti-CAA protest in Delhi in February 2020, Safoora fainted amid a scuffle with the police.
Arrested on 10 April 2020, she was accused of being a key conspirator in the Jafrabad Metro station violence.
Following her arrest, she was remanded in police custody and later granted bail before being rearrested.
She was eventually sent to Tihar Jail and placed in solitary confinement due to her pregnancy and COVID-19 concerns.
Additional charges were framed against her on 20 April 2020 by the Delhi Police.
Amid controversies, false information about her circulated on social media, including fake videos and images.
On 4 June 2020, her bail plea was rejected by the Patiala House Court in Delhi.
