He passed away on 20 February 2023 in Bengaluru due to age-related ailments.
Bhagavan began his career as a theatre actor with Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali.
In 1956, he was an assistant director for the film Bhagyodaya.
He directed Sandhya Raga (1966) but was officially credited to A. C. Narasimha Murthy.
In 1967, he co-directed Rajadurgada Rahasya with A. C. Narasimha Murthy.
He formed the famous duo Dorai-Bhagavan with B. Dorairaj, directing many films until B. Dorairaj's death in 2000.
