Ranjan Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India until his retirement on November 17, 2019.
He presided over significant cases, including the Ayodhya Land Dispute case that lasted 134 years.
His father, Keshab Chandra Gogoi, briefly served as the Chief Minister of Assam in 1982.
Before attending school, Ranjan and his brother Anjan decided via a toss that Anjan would go to Sainik School while Ranjan attended Don Bosco School.
Ranjan cleared the UPSC exam but chose to pursue law, enrolling in the bar and practicing at the Gauhati High Court in 1978.
In 1998, he lost his father, Keshab Chandra Gogoi.
On February 28, 2001, he became a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court.
He later served in various high courts before eventually becoming a Judge of the Supreme Court in April 2012.
Ranjan Gogoi has been involved in several notable cases, displaying a strict judicial demeanor.
In January 2018, he participated in a press conference highlighting issues within the Supreme Court.
Sworn in as the Chief Justice of India on September 14, 2018, he held the position until his retirement in November 2019.
