Ramakant Achrekar was born in a Marathi family in Malvan, located about 500 km from Mumbai.
At 11 years old, Achrekar moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) with his parents.
In 1943, he began studying at Chabildas High School in Dadar West, Bombay, where he started playing Cricket.
Achrekar played club cricket for New Hind Sports Club and Young Maharashtra XI.
He participated in a single first-class match in 1964, scoring 30 runs for All-India State Bank against Hyderabad.
His first coaching student was Ramnath Parkar, an opening batsman who represented India twice in the 1980s.
Sachin Tendulkar made his debut at Brabourne Stadium for CCI upon Achrekar's recommendation.
Several international players, including Sachin Tendulkar, were trained by Achrekar, who also mentored Vinod Kambli, Pravin Amre, and Ajit Agarkar.
Achrekar built relationships with his students by rewarding them with treats like Pani Puri and Kulfi for good performances.
