His family, unable to afford a television, watched cricket matches at a nearby "paan" shop during his childhood.
Coming from a financially weak background, his father did various odd jobs to support his cricket training while growing up.
His mother passed away in 2011 when he was 11, but his father's encouragement helped him continue pursuing cricket.
Starting cricket at 6, he joined the Victoria Park training ground in Meerut at age 8 to receive formal training.
Despite the 40 km distance, he took the bus daily with a sibling to the Victoria Park training ground.
Originally a fast bowler, his coaches advised him to focus on batting due to his skill, though he still desired to be a bowler.
