Mirabai Chanu hails from Manipur, India and is the youngest among six siblings.
Her role model is Kunjarani Devi.
She began weightlifting in 2008 at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.
At 11 years old, she earned her first gold medal in a local weightlifting competition.
Her competitive weightlifting journey commenced in 2011 and led to gold medals at the International Youth Championship and South Asian Junior Games.
In 2014, she won a Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Mirabai qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics but did not secure a medal.
In 2017, she won gold at the World Weightlifting Championships, breaking a 22-year gold medal drought for India.
She clinched India's first gold in weightlifting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Mirabai received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2018.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she became the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal.
